Thanks UJ. I'd forgotten about that most important part of history.

The point being that in both World Wars, Germany deliberately chose to ignore signed Treaties. Now, although not at the point of a weapon, it is once again Germany ruling the roost and stealthily scooping up countries, and in the process ,once again, diminishing those countries own self-rule. Yet, these countries once again seem to be blind to the fact and in complete and utter denial.
Hitler, being a madman, made many mistakes and his decision to attack Russia was certainly his biggest!

I agree about Germany's present-day expansionism.

The penny has dropped that they cannot hope to conquer Europe militarily now, especially as the US is directly involved in NATO.

It does appear that they are now trying to achieve their aims economically...
...and successfully.

Being ex Merchant Navy - our shipping was at war from day one. Germany's Pocket Battleships roamed the seas and shelled single merchant ships, sinking many of them. One pocket battleship - the Graf VonSpee, was caught in the South Atlantic by Commodore Harwood's squadron leading to the Battle of the River Plate in December 1939. Subsequently,in December and January 1940 the German ship Altmark containing many merchant navy prisoners was stopped by HMS Cossack in Norwegian waters and the prisoners released before Altmark was sunk.

At the root of WW1 was, as in almost all wars, economic rivalry. After losing, the german people, based on treaty of versailles, were forced to pay or all costs of. Also for the costs of france, britain, russia. This lead directly to to WW2. German parents saw their children starving and trains ful of food depart for france and ships ful for britain. In this circumstances wanted to believe hitler, who promised to free them from the oppression.
After annexation of austria, invasion of Poland without previous declaration of war, france and britain declared war on germany. The British Expeditionary Force (BEF) numbering 158.000 men, stationed in France since 1938 was planned to disembark in Poland and help defend it until a larger force is able to deploy.*France provided a mock aid under the Franco-Polish Alliance of 1920-21 by engaging in Saarland Offensive, while the BEF just remained there in France, near Belgium, until it had to evacuate in 1940 suffering heavy casualties.

So WW1 led to WW2, and WW2 to the cold war, economics as its root problem. The lessons learned are wasted on the UK. Again economic rivalry is looming on the horizon, and ensueing. Well let's just hope for common sense.

So, the BEF was there to disembark in Poland, should Germany attack Poland. It attacked in 1939, and so did the Soviet Union. It is likely that the Brits were not expecting to fight two enemies at a time. When the Polish ambassador to Britain Raczyńsky contacted the British Foreign Office after the assault on his country, the Foreign Secretary Lord Halifax responded that no military aid mentioned in the Anglo-Soviet Agreement of 1939 was possible, since the aggressor was supposed to be Germany, not the Soviet Union. So, Poland was attacked from two sides. It lost the oil-wielding regions in the east to the Stalin’s regime and its very sovereignty to the Hitler’s regime. France and Britain declared war on Germany. France provided a mock aid under the Franco-Polish Alliance of 1920-21 by engaging in Saarland Offensive, while the BEF just remained there in France, near Belgium, until it had to evacuate in 1940 suffering heavy casualties.

To summarize, the theory that Poland caused WW2 is based upon the fact that it was in a world of shit - trapped between Germany and USSR at the worst time possible. Its very existence was hindering the two to trade and be friends with each other. By forging alliances with German and Soviet enemies - France and Britain, Poland only accelerated the misery the XX century had prepared for it. One could try and draw a logical scheme, which says that Poland started the WW2 by entering in the above mentioned alliances, but had Poland not done it, the National-Socialists and Communists would have attacked it anyway, which would not have been left without a response from France and Britain. The WW2 was bound to happen.

You might draw that conclusion if you accept that War is the natural consequence of a neighbouring country not adhering to your expectations and have a disregard for diplomacy and peace.

That seems to be the European way.

Some of us think the country that started the war was the one that crossed a border or entered foreign airspace uninvinted and with violent intent in the form of it's armed forces destroying things and killing people.

That to me is a better way of deciding who started the war.
Tbh, I thought this matter had been settled decades ago!

We're alright.

Europe will eat itself once again.

This time we'll let you get on with it.

Don't fancy Holland's chances that much when the Wehrmacht come a knockin'.
