Search engines like google can be politically biased but not deliberately biased!
In my opinion search engines can and do influence public opinion on political issues and therefore can and do affect election/referendum outcomes. An example of this bias can be seen through the set of search results and their ordering shown to users. Users of search engines often will heavily prioritize the first page of a search result. Therefore, if the first page of search results are consistently biased against a particular party, candidate Orr side of an argument, the political implications of such search media could be very real. However, I am in no way suggesting or implying that search engines are deliberately biased and/or attempt to rigg results.
They are however, without doubt a significant source of information and news which people trust, and as with other forms of media, they are likely to affect our democratic process in unpredictable and controversially, sometimes in “predictable ways”.
