I agree with lots of others.........private pensions have their own rules but I'm sure the OP is referring to the state pension............and there are fixed rules for those - no excuses! Maybe the friend is having a(bad) joke with the OP??

I thought from its inception until the recent changes age 65 had always been the age when men became eligible to receive a state pension (but it could be deferred until later).The only pension received at an earlier age being a work related or private pension.
