Open Forum or Closed Forum?

This was mentioned on another thread...

So, what are the basic differences between the two, assuming both are free, and what are the advantages and disadvantages as you see them?

I don't really bother, although it keeps getting mentioned here if a guest is reading a post? I don't think you should have to worry about that. However, I'm sure I'll now be inundated with enlightenment

Re: Open Forum or Closed Forum?

For me it makes very little difference other than I don't usually use my families names on open forums. Oh and I am a little more careful when I talk about health matters as I like to trust the people I talk to about more intimate matters.

My politics and morals I am happy to share and I am interested in hearing others too.

Closed forums IME can if not handled very carefully become insular and look inside themselves far too much.

All that matters to me is people respect each other even after a lively debate and mostly here we do just the occasional person gets snidey after disagreeing.

I have to say I'm also on a closed forum that I'm enjoying very much. Haven't seen anything I didn't like so far. Its moderated very well.

Yes works well most times, and when well moderated like here is pretty good.

Re: Open Forum or Closed Forum?

I think we have the best of both on this forum. We're open for other people to view and hopefully enjoy so much that they join.
Then we have the members only section if we want to discuss something with our forum friends without the www looking in.

Who could want more?

Re: Open Forum or Closed Forum?

I prefer open myself . It is not wise to give too many personal details on any site open are closed.

I have been on some closed sites, they seem to encourage people to engage in trollish behaviour because they can't be seen by the outside world .
