Re: Voilent videos

If what we see didn't affect most of us they would not spend so much on advertising, I would argue you have to be very hardened to violence to play some of these games.
In the army they are having recruits leave because the army is not violent enough for them - brought up on violence on the screen they expect to be in a real life version of that when they join up !

Re: Voilent videos

I have for a long time thought it odd that in general folks deplore violence but seem to switch off to a parallel universe of film, tv & books which make violence a pleasant diversion, albeit a spectator version.

I heard this phrase "violence is the last resort of an exhausted mind" on a late night chat show in the 1980s. I have thought that to be true until recently.
Now I would change the word "Exhausted" to bored or incompetent.

Re: Voilent videos

Of course it will influence some people's thinking by what they see, especially if they see it frequently.

What about kids that are live in homes where their father is violent and beats up his wife regularly (or the kids). The kids that grow up no love, that will influence their lives. Or girls who have been abused and raped all their young lives? Are you telling me they just shrug it off?

What about people who watch really hard porn or bestiality all day, that must influence 'normal' relationships.

And as already been said, advertising is a perfect way of demonstrating how some people are affected by what they see.

Also, again like has already been said, we become de-sensitised to repeated exposure to things, so certain people will seek out more extreme violence, sexual games, harder drugs or whatever, to get their 'fix.'

So I'm afraid I do not agree with the ones who say what we see has no effect on us. Some will always be more susceptible than others, and its no good passing it off as rubbish just because SOME can handle it fine.

I do wonder what kind of mind gets enjoyment from choosing to watch extreme violence anywhere. I find it quite disturbing.

Re: Voilent videos

I can't stand violent films and don't watch them. I hate fighting and rows...but that's just me. I know some people who thrive on it and are quite down when there's nothing going on for them to throw themselves into and stir up trouble.....My ex husband for one....shudder. My life is so much more peaceful now he's out of it and my nerves have returned to normal.

Re: Voilent videos

But soap operas have their fare share of violence, dont see anyone shouting for the removal of those, how many assaults, murders, rapes can eastenders and corrie garner between them over the last few years. Plenty of fans of those on here. Double standards perhaps. ?

Well I'm not a fan - women beating other women - lovely
Affairs galore - no thanks
And forever throwing glasses of beer into the face of another - again, no thanks
Its just perpetuating the idea that if you have a grievance don't talk - just assault !

Thats criminal what a waste of beer.

I remember, going to the flicks in the 50`s and seeing loads of redskins getting their just desserts for raiding the wagon trains, and gunslingers being brought down low for their crimes, not to mention dastardly aliens blasted from our heavens, did not turn me into a homicidal maniac.

Lets face it the media and likes of youtube can provide plenty of the real thing with a world gone crazy, can we blame this on videos. ?

I think greed, religion, poverty have a bigger influence on peoples attitudes these days.
