Hi

sadly yes Art, you are spot on.

They can be taken by detainees and then used to threaten officers to break out.

Armed officers leave their guns when entering a secure area specifically to prevent this happening.

The issue here is that a detainee, handcuffed, managed to smuggle a gun in.

I do not know the current working practices of the Met.

I do know that in other forces they are scanned before entry.

Officers in secure areas have tasers and batons, which are more than adequate to control handcuffed prisoners before a strip search, if required.

The last Police Officers before this killed by firearms where in 2012, a gun and grenade attack, being armed would not have prevented it.

We have specialist firearms unit on patrol.

They are very efficient.
Good post Swims, and as I said in an earlier post. These events are rare in the UK, arming all police officers would be a bit of a knee jerk reaction. And I also agree when Swims says that a criminal could disarm a policeman with a gun and turn it on the officer....Gun crime would escalate and more policemen would end up shot as in the American model....

I do agree that our specialist police firearms units are very professional and effective.

As I said earlier, though, it necessarily takes time for them to arrive at the scene.

I'd like to see more of them so that they can be stationed locally in more places.

For that matter, I think it would be advantageous if they had more helicopters too.

Money, of course!

I agree with that JB.
The police force has been decimated and underfunded for many years, and I didn't think it was a good idea to centralise the police stations and close down all the small local ones. The local bobby is not local anymore and a valuable asset (local knowledge) has been lost in the fight against petty crime. The local bobby knew who all the villains were, where they lived, and where they supped, and it would save a lot of police time apprehending suspects.

Re: Police Officier shot dead

Hi

Thank you so much OGF and JBR.

Yes we are underfunding the Police and yes we do need more specialist fire arms officers in certain parts of the UK.

We are fine here in Shropshire, we have upped our game, others sadly have not.

We have local bobbies who people talk to and do not feel afraid to, they do not carry guns.

They are not perceived as a threat and get very valuable information.

Real life is not like TV, there is a huge difference.

Re: Police Officier shot dead

I haven’t seen a local bobby for years much less spoken to one .

Yesterday I went on the motorway and did see a police car.

Ha ha Yes, you get points for spotting a bobby on his beat Muddy, not so many points for the police car on the motorway though.
They always seem to be there when you don't want one, and when some young Max Verstappen goes hurtling by on the inside lane there's not one to be seen...

Just arm the police. It should have been done years ago and now is necessary more than ever.

Give them the tools to clean our streets from filth.
