Re: Statement by the EU.

The Internal Market Bill is just an insurance policy to allow/guarantee the unhindered flow of trade between the UK and NI if there's no agreement on a trade deal. A trade deal makes it all disappear. A Backstop if you want. I remember when May's Backstop was being discussed ad infinitum a while back and we would have a procession of Irish politicians and Eurocrats telling us it was nothing to worry about and it would only be implemented if a solution to the Irish border question could not be found. As soon as an acceptable technological solution was found then there would be no need for it.

So, if the EU were so keen on that Backstop then why all the panic now? Not hard to work out is it?

If there is no trade agreement and the Bill is implemented then whether it breaks International law or not will be a matter for some court to decide. Obviously not the ECJ. And, if that court finds against the UK then what do you suppose the punishment might be? A fine, and that's it.

Indeed. Just the EU dictators sounding off in their desperation.
I sincerely hope that Boris treats them with the disdain that they deserve.

Yep, boris desperately needs and wants a deal he can present as a victory over the EU. As long as the WA is not fully honoured there will be no trade deal.
So boris will try to back down without loss of face.

Wrong.
Even if there is a trade deal, there will be checks of goods and customs to be paid. So you will have a customs border (which is not the same as an international border).
May introduced a backstop, which the HoC didn't want. So the EU said the would equivalent measures to the backstop. Boris came up with a customs border in the irish sea. (May had previously rejected that) Boris sold it to you as a triumph, you all fell for it.
In effect there already is a (alternative) backstop present, so boris is lying when he tells you he needs the internal market bill as a backstop.

Who keeps saying they want to trade on wto rules? Those rules demand a customs border where tariffs are paid and goods are checked. If you send goods to britain from NI without checking, all other countries are entitled (wto rules!) to do the same. Or is the UK going to break those rules too?
