The Speaker presides over the House's debates, determining which members may speak. The Speaker is also responsible for maintaining order during debate, and may punish members who break the rules of the House. Unlike presiding officers of legislatures in many other countries, Speakers remain strictly non-partisan and renounce all affiliation with their former political parties when taking office and afterwards. The Speaker does not take part in debate or vote (except to break ties; and even then, the convention is that the speaker casts the tie-breaking vote according to Speaker Denison's rule).

I don't think anyone can, and having read various posts since yours, it would appear that the Speaker is just about above all others. Not sure about him supposed to being impartial, how can impartiality make a threat to attempt to block the PM's plan ?

He blocked may from bringing her deal in the HoC not because he didn't like her plan (he is impartial, remember) but because her action was in contradiction with the rules. And the speaker's role is to preserve the correct procedures, one of which says that government cannot bring back a bill that has been voted down twice. At least, not unchanged. And that was the case with may's plan.

The same goes for boris, if he would prorogue parliament, with the intent to prevent mp's from performing their democratic function.

Thanks for your excellent explanation of our speakers duties
Solly, you seem to understand our archaic system better than
me? But both you and Puddleduck brought up the issue of
Bercows impartiality, or rather partiality, this should be grounds
for dismissal if he speaks out about a paricular policy or
issue surely if guilty of so doing. Perhaps Boris has grounds
for this now that Bercow has stated in public that HE will
never let the government leave eu without a deal?
What are the chances of kyboshing him this way?

Aahh, the wonderful Mr. Bercow, Under investigation for bullying his staff. The man who insisted that another MP stand aside for him in the corridor so he may pass and was told where to go. The man who has brought the position of the Speaker of the House to shame. A despicable, biased, partisan pygmy, fortunate to be in a position where one is meant to be completely neutral at all time as befits his position, but is instead completely open about his backing and favour for remain MP's in the House of Commons. Now we have him making his statement about stopping Boris from proroguing Parliament - to his last breath.

I thought Michael Martin as Speaker, was the absolute pits, but Bercow really takes the biscuit with his disgraceful action.

His Mrs (Sally in the Alley) prefers shagging Bercows brother to her husband

Says a lot for the pygmy

None. Simply because that is not what bercow said. Bercow is dead against boris prorogueing parliament to avoid mp's having a say on brexit. And that is one of the most important functions of the speaker, guarding that the parliament is heard. He will probably succeed in achieving that.

The doesn't infer that parliament can stop brexit. What options are now open for mp's is limited.
They can ratify the withdrawal deal may struck with the EU. Very little chance of that.
They can accept a vote of no confidence. As dominique cummings rightly pointed out, time for that has passed. Boris can call a GE after october 31. He concomitantly neutralizes farage by such a move.
Third and final, parliament can legalize for revoking article 50. That is the only way to stop brexit from happening and it would end the whole process. It would keep the UK in the EU, so the havoc for political parties.

Macron had better have a word with them toot sweet and make sure his fishermen follow international law before allowing blockades, as if they do carry out their threat to prevent any fish caught by British fishermen from ever being sold on the Continent, surely they will just be cutting off their nose to spite their face.

Just think how many French processors and jobs that could be lost? The UK is already looking at expanding their non-EU markets and threats like this will just accelerate that quest.
French fishermen may well threaten to beat their chests, but the biggest losers will be French processing jobs.

Is that what they want?
