I think that expensive luxuries are out of the reach of youngsters trying to get away from renting even with a couple where both are working. Many are still having to live with parents while trying to get a deposit together while into their late 20's and 30's.

I have pondered before the vicious circle where people go out to work to provide labour saving devices to enable them to go out to work

That's how it used to be too isn't it? Newly weds years ago would rarely have had their own place, they lived with parents or in-laws, so nothings changed there.

Maybe some did, but most managed their own place in their 20's.

Inflation took care of things for previous generations who found their properties worth a great deal more than they paid for them very quickly.
