Hancock faces fresh scrutiny after ‘using private email for government business’

https://metro.co.uk/2021/06/27/matt-...ount-14834789/

The disgraced health secretary could be investigated over whether he used his own personal account to negotiate contracts and communicate with officials during the pandemic.

Using a Gmail account rather than a designated government address makes communications less accessible to officials within his own department and members of the public submitting Freedom of Information requests.

It could mean crucial emails, potentially including ones where the awarding of lucrative PPE contracts were discussed, may never see the light of day.
Patently, "Soapy" Hancock was circumventing approved procedures for his own ends .....

No doubt, now, that we shall be informed .....

Hi

If you are a Cabinet Minister all your emails, private or otherwise, are recorded.

You cannot get round the system.

You may think that WhatsApp is secure.

Not if Dominic releases them.

You may think you are being clever in using Encrypted systems, that is just a joke.

Nobody, but nobody ,is in any way interested in you arranging a threesome with the vicar and his wife.

It is known, you are not a blackmail risk.

Boris Johnson tries to claim credit for Matt Hancock departure

https://www.theguardian.com/politics...cock-departure

Boris Johnson has sought to claim the credit for removing the disgraced former health secretary Matt Hancock, despite Downing Street repeatedly saying on Friday he “considered the matter closed”.

Asked by reporters whether Hancock’s relationship with the Department of Health board member Gina Coladangelo had undermined public health messaging, Johnson said: “That’s right, and that’s why when I saw the story on Friday we had a new secretary of state for health in on Saturday.”

Despite Johnson’s remarks appearing to suggest he had removed Hancock, his official spokesperson conceded on Monday that had not been the case, and Hancock had voluntarily resigned.
“The health secretary offered his resignation, he discussed it with the prime minister and he agreed it was the right decision,” the spokesperson said.

Asked why it was not deemed the right decision on Friday, he said: “They discussed the issue further on Saturday, and the prime minister accepted his resignation and agreed it was the right thing to do.”
Hoist by his own petard and caught out in an "attempted fabrication" .....

Boris Johnson's university friend gets ethics watchdog role

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-57860969

Former lawyer Ewen Fergusson will begin a five-year stint on the Committee on Standards in Public Life next month.

He was a member of Oxford University's Bullingdon Club* at the same time as the prime minister.

No 10 rejected a cronyism allegation, saying the role had been filled by "open and fair competition".

Mr Fergusson features in a famous 1987 picture of Bullingdon members, alongside Mr Johnson and former Conservative PM David Cameron.

The prime minister's official spokesman said on Friday that Mr Fergusson had applied for the ethics committee role "through open and fair competition".

His application was "carefully considered" by a panel, which interviewed him and found him "suitable for appointment," the spokesman added.

Asked when Mr Johnson last spoke to Mr Fergusson, the spokesman said he had not asked the prime minister directly about it.

The son of a British diplomat, Mr Fergusson has been a self-employed business adviser since 2018, when he left City law firm Herbert Smith Freehills.

His role on the standards committee, announced on Thursday, will see him advise the prime minister on ethical standards in public life.
The irony:

* The Bullingdon Club was an elite dining club which became notorious at Oxford for lavish rituals, opulent banquets and smashing up restaurants.

The picture of the "Club" is a painted copy - the photo copyright holders have withdrawn the original from circulation .....

Government rules out searching Matt Hancock's private emails

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-57930820

The government has said it will not search the private email account of former Health Secretary Matt Hancock for discussions on official business.

Downing Street has admitted Mr Hancock, who quit last month, used his personal address for this reason.

The campaign group Good Law Project argued his inbox should be checked for the sake of transparency.

But the government rejected this, saying a sweep of emails was "neither necessary nor proportionate".

The Sunday Times has reported that, as a result of Mr Hancock's use of his personal account, the government does not have a record of much of his decision-making during the pandemic.

This, it said, included negotiating PPE contracts, creating the test-and-trace programme and overseeing the care homes strategy.

Good Law Project director Jo Maugham said:
"We have arrived a rather bizarre situation. The government won't look to see what business [ministers] chose to use their private email addresses to conduct. They clearly don't want the public to know what's there - and perhaps they fear finding out themselves."
