Strange...

...how few serious (or any) threads there are on here about really saving money. I guess the era of austerity is finally over as we all seem to have all the cash we need and some left over. Dave C. and his merry men have clearly done a good job, and we sail forth into the sunlit uplands....

Re: Strange...

Not so sure about that. But we all lead different lives and one of my money saving tips would likely not work for anyone else, I see it when I suggest how to make things cheaply most people respond haven't got time to do that. I would guess they are time poor rather than money poor.

Tips that would save hundreds of pounds a year are likely not something we would be able to do as we are already cut to the bone and don't use whatever the person is suggesting we cut.

Eh? That nice Mr Macmillan told you in 1957 that "...you'd never had it so good." didn't you believe him?

Anyway who wants to save money at our age? No one asks for their bank statement on their death bed. (Mind you I am going insist on taking mine with me). Now is the time of life to lead a hedonistic lifestyle if ever there was one.

Re: Strange...

Does that really save a lot ? I have no windows in my 22 foot hallway so light always goes on or we would be falling over toys and dogs. But if it saved enough I might risk a hip !

I have no money to save, the current snake oil salesmen have seen it go to their mates.

We live in a bungalow ,all rooms lead off the hall ,the lights from the other rooms light the hall up ,and if they go in the other rooms the hall light gets left on all night .

My other saving is turning the Tv off while OH watches it through closed eyes and snores.

Re: Strange...

We read our meter weekly to keep an eye on the cost, since we have no TV reception we have turned ours off unless we want to watch a DVD which is just an hour or two.

Have we noticed a difference in our consumption ? no

Re: Strange...

Turning off lights, especially with these energy saving bulbs saves three parts of bugger all.

The biggest money saving I ever made was turning off my beer fridge and keeping it all in the main fridge. Even then the saving is less than $200 a year or $4 a week. I think I would rather have cold beer.

I am told that because I rarely use my stove and cook mainly with a microwave or gas BBQ I save 70% of my cooking costs but can't say I notice it in the bill.

I pay less than $200 (£100) a quarter for electricity and nearly half of that is a fixed fee so what can you save by skimping?
