The spare room

Mods- not really a gardening thread, so please don't move it there.

We often seem to tell of stories about garden projects, plants and growing our own food.

But how often do you actually sit out in them (weather permitting) purely to relax, read the paper/book, do a crossword, watch TV or a movie on a laptop/pad, chat on here or other fora etc etc? (Heaven forbid eg setting up a bike on a stand and doing a bit of exercise!!!)

No worry of having to clean sweaty sofas, nor hoovering the floor, plus you can throw some bits of food into the undergrowth or to feed birds. No worry of crumbs falling off you when you stand up.

Or is it always a work in progress for either utilitarian or decorative effect?

Do you really use this relatively large spare room to best effect?

I know I don't!

Re: The spare room

I never go into gardens because I don't like strong sunlight or too much heat. I also have no interest in gardening as a hobby so wherever I have lived I chose a home with no garden. My mother has a garden, which my late stepfather looked after, but she pays someone to keep it tidy. In 20+ years we haven't sat out in it.

Re: The spare room

Good question Dex, gardens are great to sit out in, not to relax, but to watch Mother Nature, defying your best efforts, spose you can work with her, or, against her. Some of us insist on sterilizing a patch of ground and introducing nature back in on our terms, that is never going to work in the long term, and that is good because, when stuff is finished and its time to relax, you find you can't and have to go at it again.

Re: The spare room

It is nice though, to sit out and do a Sudoku, in between throwing a ball for the dog.

Re: The spare room

We have a summerhouse and sit in it as often as we can, even eating our meals in there, we just sometimes just sit and watch the birds on the feeder, we also have a small water feature just outside so listening to the sound of water is very relaxing, too relaxing sometimes as I often fall asleep

Re: The spare room

I'm always in my garden...it's definitely a well used extra room....if it's nice we eat outside too. Your summer house sounds lovely Primus....wish I had one of those.

Everyone starts off wanting a Big One, it takes a few years to realise, size can be a bit of a bind.

Re: The spare room

Interesting to compare the garden to a spare room.

I like our outside spare room. All I do is cut the carpet and do some minimal tidying up. It's not as dusted and tidy as some outside spare rooms but I like it. The birds fly in and out at will and I enjoy watching them feed, especially my friendly blackbird. I quite often sit there and do nothing but enjoy the space it gives.

Re: The spare room

I use our seating area,(decking) as much as I can, watching the bumbles go in and out of the Fuschia flowers, listening to music and reading my kindle.
