£86k for drink driving

Ant, from Ant & Dec fame has just stepped out of Court having been given a fine of £86k after his recent crash in London when he was found to be twice over the limit.

A lot of money, but he can well afford it, and he may be thinking himself lucky that he wasn't sent to jail.

wow that is very steep fine but like you say, he can easily afford it. I think not many people go to jail for first drink drive offence. I'm glad he didn't go to jail, I think he's learned his lesson the hard way.

I just looked on the .gov website and the fine for drink driving is up to £2500 yet Ant got fined £86000, is that the norm to fine you more the more wealth you have I wonder?

That doesn't make sense does it. The fine should be the same for all. Otherwise we could argue the fine should be less than £25000 for those on a low income.

His "weekly income of about £130,000" comes to £6,760,000 pa so his fine is about 1% of his yearly income - he won't even notice the loss .....

Less than a weeks wages to him I've known people almost bankrupted by fines. So the shock horror it's a lot really doesn't make sense to me.

Hi

I fear some have been looking at the wrong bit of legislation.

He was not charged with being in charge of a vehicle, for which the maximum fine is £2500, ie you were sat in it.

He was charged with driving or attempting to drive a vehicle, for which there is an unlimited fine.

The fine is calculated according to a formula.

When you earn the type of money these 'supastars' earn, money means nothing. Better if he was given some sort of community service. Didn't Wayne Rooney get that sort of punishment recently.

...It would be interesting to know where all this money (from such fines) goes to...
