The fine is calculated according to a formula.

I thought it went to repair our roads and build new ones.

I'm probably wrong!

I might be wrong but isn't the most they can fine is two thirds of a person's income? Well something like that.

I'm not sure that's true if you are on a very low income the fines can be so high they set you up to fail, when you earn massive figures it doesn't even make you wince.

Re: £86k for drink driving

I think Ant McPartlin's Drink Driving offence would fall into the Band C category (assuming he was a 1st time offender)
That would normally attract a sentence of between 17-22 months driving ban
plus a fine ranging from 125% to 175% of relevant weekly income, with a starting point of 150% of relevant income, and/or a community service order.

There are guidelines for discretionary adjustments where offenders relevant weekly income is unusually high or low.

I think Ant's sentence sounds about right for his circumstances and level of income. (Unless the TV company are continuing to pay him while he is not working, I don't suppose his current relevant weekly income will be as high now as it used to be?)
The report I heard mentioned that the fact he already did a lot of charity work was a factor in no community service being imposed as well.

McPartlin should have been sent down for his crime, and banned from driving for life. I hope he is sacked, by ITV.

I surprised you didn’t mention hanging, or castration as well
