Three cylinders.

Been sort of looking around for the next car, probably a hatchback like a Astra or 308,which got me thinking about the 308's 3 cylinders,we all know about the 4 cylinder jobbies of all makes and their endurance,I suspect every one knows of a car with 100,000+ miles on them (petrol or diesel) but is the 3 cylinder still in its infancy to tell if its a stayer to record high mileage? any thoughts people.

Re: Three cylinders.

There was a three cylinder SAAB (I think it was) driven by Pat Moss's husband (who's name escapes me - Carlsson perhaps?) very successfully in rallys in the 60s or 70s. It might have been a two stroke motor.

Re: Three cylinders.

My Fiesta Zetec S has a 3-cylinder turbocharged 1 litre engine - no problems with it yet - it has a top speed of 125 mph, does 0-60 in 9 seconds, returns 50 miles/gallon and I don't pay road tax .....

Re: Three cylinders.

My wife had a 52-plate three cylinder Corsa from new and it drove like a dream. She has only replaced it recently for a newer car, a Fiesta. The engine was faultless all those years.

I have a Focus 1.0 Ecoboost which is a fantastic car. Lots of power for such a tiny engine.

Re: Three cylinders.

Lots of three cylinder engines around now C, in fact some of my more modern mini excavators had three cylinder engines and were very efficient.

Re: Three cylinders.

Years ago, I had a loan car from the garage which was a three cylinder Toyota Yaris. Bit rough and underpowered......

Re: Three cylinders.

I’m on my second three cylinder car, they’ve been around for ages ( there’s nothing new in the car world), although now they tend to fit turbos and with modern technology they tend to run very smooth, Ford did have a few problems with the coolant pipes corroding leading to overheating and destroying the engines, mainly on the focuses, but these should have been sorted by now

Re: Three cylinders.

Stirling Moss is the brother of Pat who married Erik Carlsson who drove a Saab 96 which had a two-stroke, three-cylinder engine.

Apparently, because the rally Saab 96 was seriously underpowered it was necessary to keep the revs up, so he had to perfected the technique of maintaining a high speed while cornering and braking with his left foot.

He also liked to roll his rally cars .....
