It's good to see that our taxes are being spent wisely

The MoD spent £4.2 billion on “Technical, Financial Services and Other Services”. A handy statistical bulletin released today itemised the £20 billion of the defence budget spent within the UK in 2014/15:

“The industry group that received the highest level of expenditure from the MOD was ‘Technical, Financial Services and Other Business Services’, at just over £4.2 billion. This covers services for legal, accounting, management consultancy, and technical testing and analysis.”
The amount spent on pen pushers is nearly twice the level of expenditure on “Aircraft and Spacecraft” and approximately 350% more than on “Weapons and Ammunition”. Maybe the MoD is developing “keyboard warriors”…

Not that it matters of course with the winding down of our military

I once saw a contractors invoice at RAF Leeming, the costing you wouldn't believe.
Changing of 7 light bulbs @ £25 each
Replacing 3 double sockets @ £80 each
and so on.
This was over 20 years ago.

The list was far bigger but these two stood out.
Nothing new I'm afraid.

It's still the same, if not worse.
For things like the M&E maintenance / repairs on bases, they still use outside FM companies, where they could very easily employ people direct and keep these things in house so to speak. It really is daft - they could save a bloody fortune.

They are not ripped off.

They demand more from their contractors in the way of higher insurances, longer guarantees, stricter working restrictions/rules etc.

Plus they are willing to pay a higher premium in an attempt to keep reliable contractors.

The contractors win the contracts by undercutting everyone else and would run at a loss, it's the extras where they profit.

They are their own worst enemy.
Sorry I think £75 to change a light bulb and £15 for a loaf of bread is ripping them off, they must seek better prices or no matter how much taxes they raise these organisations will fail.

Have you ever tendered for a contract?
These clients nail you to the floor on prices.

Many companies would be bankrupt if they ran at a loss like this.
It's the extras where you have to profit.

It's the same in the building/construction trade.
Quote to win, price extras to profit.

Only cleaning we would have been laughed out of the office if we had said £15 for a bottle of polish but then we were in the private sector.
