Re: Death Of The High Street?
Our small town is very quiet too. Not just Covid, but the main shopping area was some time ago bought by a faceless conglomerate from London, who know nothing of our town & care even less, it's all money, money, money to them. They put rents up way too much for most independent shops to afford. Last time I went there were 4 empty shops & the rest were either estate agents, charity shops & not much else. Before the shopping area was built we had a proper high street with lots of independent shops & 4 banks. Only one bank now & it's not mine, so I shop elsewhere. It's sad.Re: Death Of The High Street?
Any shop owner, who wants to survive, will have to look very closely at how Amazon, and a few who have tried to keep up with Amazon, have managed to, totally, alter the shopping experience.Re: Death Of The High Street?
My town consists of curry houses, kebab shops, indian clothing shops, ice cream parlour, 3 nail bars, 2 newsagents, 1 post office, 1 phone shop, 2 jewellers, 3 or 4 pound shops, chinese take away, 3 or 4 banks, 1 pawn shop, Jack Fultons freezer shop, 2 bakers, tattoo parlours, All but the banks, bakers, Jack Fultons and 1 jewellers are run by pakistani and indian asians and of course the chinese asian. I rarely go to our local town except to tesco but only then because it's on my doorstep, I don't particularly like Tesco either. I wish our town was bustling like it used to be, there are no more than 2 stalls on the market on a friday, it can hardly be called a market. The next town to me is the same, almost all shops run by the asian community. I wish Leeds wasn't so far away, I'd go there, at least there are some decent shops there.Re: Death Of The High Street?
I have commented on High Street deaths before - a long while back. Supermarkets pretty much knocked them for six. Then it was next for the door to door groceries and stuff. Almost anything. Then Covids exacerbated them.Re: Death Of The High Street?
Where I live, the high street has not been affected because there is nothing of value in shopping wise, no major stores because they left the town years ago. Granted there has been a small reduction in foot traffic but the only shop to close (so far) has been a Demelza charity shop that specialised in selling furniture but it closed down because they were not able to honour their delivery pledge which was to carry the furniture into your home (not allowed to enter strangers properties due to not knowing about virus situation) and thus not being able to sell furniture meant they was not able to pay the rent.Re: Death Of The High Street?
Re: Death Of The High Street?
We lost our bank some years ago...then we had to travel to the next village , no big deal,, only a couple of miles away, after a couple of years it closed too, now it's a 30 mile round trip to the nearest bank which we ventured today. A walk down the high street...mobile phone shops, pound shop, charity shops,...closing down sale, there's still M&S and H Samuel's, but that's the only two old shops remaining, there's only one shoe shop...is this what they call progress??Re: Death Of The High Street?
