Re: Canned Bread

I seem to remember uncooked dough in a tube many years ago, (maybe Mr Pillsbury 60's 70's ? ) I remember thinking 'why' when bread is so quick and easy to make.

Re: Canned Bread

I can confirm that it was the B&M bread on the TV show. They make around 800,000 cans a year.

Molasses, water, powdered milk, flour, baking powder (quicker raising agent than yeast) plus some other odds and ends.

Half fill a can, steam cook it for 3 hours, seal can whilst still hot, and hey presto!

Stays fresh for up to 3 years.

Re: Canned Bread

Bleugh I wouldn't touch that if it was the only bread available. It looks absolutely revolting, and nothing like bread at all.

Why? Just why? For camping, they say. Well there are lots of other things you can eat while camping that work pretty darn well in cans. And anyway, who wants to lug a load of heavy cans around when you've already got your tent, sleeping bag, change of clothes, camping cookware, torch etc etc My kids used to take dried food with them and mix it with purified stream water

We go (went) backpacking with the dog, and the less weight you carry, the better...its a killer on the knees, lugging everything around.

Re: Canned Bread

It was available in military rations back in the dark ages, if I remember correctly it was a tad chewy.

First canned food was around 1810. Not sure this is what people consider to be the "dark ages".
