Re: Where the plastic goes

That is an interesting article, Muddy, it begs a few questions though - if it is known that plastic is so harmful - why is anybody still making the stuff?

Instead of spending time/money on tracking stuff from the 1950s - why don't they spend it on researching a solution to the problem.

Hi Muddy, l could'nt get past all the privacy, donation, and
advertising paraphenalia on your link so l did'nt watch or
rather read it?
However, lthink the problem we have with stopping the
production of plastic packaging is the cost of retooling the
Industry to use alternative materials such as paper or other
natural products which are recyceable or biodegradeable!
We allready have the technology to do this because we used
use these materials years ago?
The problem we have now is the mind set of the industry
Which includes the advertising and printing industries and
their ( understandable? ) reluctance to spend the money on
anything other than their inflated saleries?

Thank you, Donkeyman.

Shops befuddle me on this score - they ask you to save the planet by bringing your own bags - but - if you forget or over shop and have to buy one of theirs what are they made from? Plastic. Why not paper carriers?

Re: Where the plastic goes

Trouble is if we don't use plastic and use biodegradable products they usually originate from wood and obtained by destroying the forests. Glass is made using high temperatures creating lots of CO2 burning fossil fuels or electricity.
Using electricity even from wind turbines which requires lots of lubrication (oil) and solar panels which have lots of glass and plastic components.

Solve one problem and make another....

Not sure paper carriers would be much good for frozen stuff, Tabs, or many tins which weigh a fair bit and packages with sharp corners?

90% of pine forests are grown worldwide on a plantation
basis OGF, Which means as soon as they are cut, they are
replanted, so the number of trees growing allways stays the
the same, or even increases depending on demand!
So l dont see that as a problem?
On the glass issue l agree with you but it could be made
less of an issue by reusing the glass containers as glass
is very easy to wash and sterilize!

From what lve seen Mups most frozen products are
allready made from cardboard and paper, yoghurts and
things like that can be contained in glass or even waxed
cardboard?

True - but clothing shops have no such excuse, Mups.
