Slow release fertiliser would be my guess. It's good stuff and I use slow release fertiliser in my baskets - feeds the plants all through the season.

Or maybe water retaining gel, although it would say on the bag if it contained that.

You didn't actually say if it's a new unopened bag or one left over from last year and already been opened. If it's the latter it could well be some form of bug left offs.

Hi all,thanks for all the replies,much appreciated.
after much googling it seems its a slow release fertiliser called osmocote.
which is a relief as i have more than enough slugs already !!
