Of course I am a believer in free speech and how dare you suggest otherwise. However, the restrictions are not about free speech they are about the protection of peoples data.

Perhaps you should have watched 'Brexit: The Uncivil War' to get some understanding as to what can be done with peoples data.

As SF says, get over it!

The protection of peoples data ...

It used to be a system called "Safe Harbour" and it was a trust relationship between the EU and the US. Personal data could be sent back and forth across the two continents provided certain security policies were applied to these computer systems that held the data.

The USA verbally notified the EU that these controls were in place but over the years, security breaches by the likes of facebook, amazon etc indicated that this was not enforced across the board.

As a result, the EU took the opportunity to come up with GDPR which basically prevents personal data from the EU appearing on servers unless the GDPR controls were applied (like in the USA for example)

However, as most personal data is hosted around the world in public and private cloud infrastructure GDPR is getting more and more difficult to police, so the whole thing is bollcks really.

The bigger picture is the EU worried about companies like Amazon holding most of their data on US hosted cloud infrastructure and they don't like it. They want to annex the USA and keep all their data within the EU. To illustrate the size of these hosting companies GDP, Apple has about 4 times that of Denmark.

Meanwhile people still use Facebook, WhatsApp, FaceTime, Amazon Alexa, Siri, Bixby, Instagram etc .... where is your data ? Answer is, nobody really knows, its in the cloud somewhere in many countries around the world.

Does GDPR work ?

erm ... not really.

Anyone up for some ethical hacking ?

If you choose a remote server set in the US, for all intents and purposes you are in the US. A VPN also masks your internet activity from your ISP as the whole connection is encrypted. Mine is a paid service £30 p.a. but there are quite a few free ones to choose from.

A bit more info here:

Thank you for that information Judd, I will have a look at this with great interest. x

Well I found it interesting bread thank you for posting. It seems to me we wanted to protect people but have created a bit of a monster that if happened here we would call nanny state I think. I would prefer to be given a choice if I want to read something it should be up to me to decide if it's data collection is safe for me to do so.

I see some (not you) are choosing to ignore the medical help we will no longer be able to access too, I started with my rubbish as I thought that brought a little humour to it but it's deadly serious stuff we will miss out on really.

I use the HOXX browser extension when blocked by US sites.

As for get over it don't be so rude if we have to listen to you about your sofa not matching your curtains I think my losing my magazines is a valid thread too.
you didn't lose the great stuff you can still access the research, it just requires you to look for a source that is complying to modern regulation which aim is to protect citizens.
