Hi

Yes, strangely enough most accidents involve young inexperienced drivers.

We have many older drivers out here in the sticks, to be without a car is terrible.

They very rarely venture far from the village, drive slowly and really are not a big thing.

Remember, we are not far off being that age ourselves.

Re: Your thoughts and Views

Lets us face it most old drivers who are poor drivers have been poor drivers all their lives. The roads are full of them, young and old and in truth driving standards are deplorable.

I am normally doing 95 after just leaving the house and feel very comfortable and at ease doing it. If people are not comfortable doing it perhaps they should not be on the roads .

Re: Your thoughts and Views

We had a thread on elderly drivers a couple of months back called - driving after 70, but I do agree with you Marj that there seems to be a speight of accidents caused by us oldies lately.

I'd be lost without my car, but I hope I will be able to recognise when I am no longer safe to drive, and be sensible about it.

Re: Your thoughts and Views

When my father in law got really bad we tried to convince him to give up.
He was in his early 70's but his sight to the left was awful.

He was getting weak too, one day him and mum arrived at our house and mum mentioned feeling a bit sick. I asked why and she said because the car was so wiggely..
OH went to investigate and found that dad had changed a wheel and the wheel nuts were so slack that OH could undo them with his fingers.

Despite this when we telephoned the DVLA, the GP and the local police we were told that we should try to convince him to give up or else just wait until he had an accident!

Re: Your thoughts and Views

In my opinion. most accidents are caused by younger people who don't seem to understand any road that I'm driving on is MINE! I've been driving for 52 years and have paid much more in registration, licence, insurance and other government charges than the young ones, ergo it's MY road. Get out of the way!

To drive you need good reflexes and cognitive skills, and older drivers may not realise when theirs have begun to decline.
Lots of varying views, thank you.

Indigo, you put it in a nutshell, I totally agree.

Re: Your thoughts and Views

I think bad drivers come in all ages, those who MUST be in front of the car in front of them, the "my car is more powerful than your car" people, the boy racers, the girl racers, the doddering tortoises, all varieties really. Regarding medicals, here in Spain you have to have a "medical" every five years in order to renew your licence. The medical consists of reflex tests, great fun that, you get to play on machines, stopping a ball rolling through a tunnel, next one two balls on wiggly wavy roads, you have to keep the ball on the roads, difficult one that when your left hand automatically wants to go the same way as your right hand, the third one is not so difficult, you have to stop the ball at certain points on a fairly fast moving wavy road.

Having done that next comes the eye test, very stringent too, this is followed by a pretty general medical, blood pressure, declaring what medications you take etc etc.

All this takes about an hour, each test is done by a different doctor, the final doctor gives you the medical certificate which you can either hand over at reception for them to obtain your licence for you, or you can take your certificate to Traffico yourself and obtain your new licence.

I´m not too sure because things change quickly here, but it used to be that once you reached 80 this medical had to be done every 2 years. Perhaps it still is, I´m not really sure.

Re: Your thoughts and Views

Driving is far more traumatic these days as my poor old Dad used to say - there are too many cars and too many careless drivers .
However I have never yet been cut up by an oldie .
Young louts and dozy young women yes .
