Re: £2,000 a month?How could I live on that?

I will say it once again, it is the children who will suffer, not the dozy parents who had them, why should the kids be punished for the deeds of their parents?

Re: £2,000 a month?How could I live on that?

I think I must live in a different world to many people I have always lived on a tiny income just a fraction of what most people get and the figures mentioned above .

I have taken pride in managing on very little, doing my own repairs, making clothes, preparing meals from scratch ,never owing anyone a penny, having a spotlessly clean house.
To me there is great satisfaction in doing these things and this far outweighs having lots of possessions or a huge income.

Meg, you sound just like my mother did, and I was determined that I should do a lot better for myself than she did. However, this was not regarded as greed or anything like it, but getting on in the world. We lived in a 2 up 2 down terraced house, yet it was in an age where a good education and working hard were encouraged and looked upon as the key to as better life. So, form that small street came doctors, university professors, an RAF officer etc...

I had a series of good jobs, bought my first house at 22 and by the time I 'retired' at 56, was earning a lot more than £32k.

Now what really P***es me off more than the sensationalist stories of people living on benefits, is the way that hard working people are penalised for being careful with their money.

There seems to be a misconception that "One" has to work hard to generate a high income.

Absolutely agree with you, but you have to use your brain and think out the box a bit.

A bit like the Dire Straits song.....

"Now look at them yo-yos thats the way you do it
You play the guitar on the mtv
That aint workin thats the way you do it
Money for nothin and chicks for free"

Of course, I'm looking at it from the perspective of a 1950's Presbyterian upbringing, though two of my friends from schooldays did make a reasonable living from rock music.

As for actual incomes, I've found it confusing simply looking up statistics on the web. There seems to be close relationships between the average salaries and the type of business, size of company and years of experience. I can only say from reliable info , that there are many jobs which pay substantial salaries and if two adults in a family are working full time, a comfortable standard of living can be achieved.
