I'm going to think of that "certain age" as my State Pension age, it keeps moving so I'll probably never reach it!

Oooo, not so fast.

The phrase, as I am familiar, is used as one of delicate respect for women who have attained a certain aget. It is usually followed with something positive like:

Women of a certain age can get away with wearing pearls everyday.

Diamonds of those size should be reserved for women of a certain age.

Champagne is wasted on anyone but women of a certain age.

Though I am not typically sitting behind my laptop bedecked in jewels with my running shoes, I like the sound of being a woman...well, you know.

I think a certain age depends on your health. Very admirable if people can feel young despite being sick but if I were ill that would be the nail on the head. I would not have sufficient gumption to feel young and carefree while feeling miserably ill.

But while you have your health and looks why should anything change?

Nor is it been negative to be pragmatic. Some people's health often dictates how they feel about life in general.

I agree with that.
I don't think slowing down it is so much to do with age, as health. If you can stay pretty fit, healthy and mobile, I don't see the need to 'slow down' unless you want to of course.

Unfortunately not everyone is in the position to choose though, they can't do whatever they want, no matter how much they would like to.

An example is those that need someone to escort them, or push a wheelchair, or are in constant pain. I can't imagine anything more debilitating than living with daily pain. I'm not sure how I'd cope with that.
Some medications alter how people live too, as can loneliness, depression, and being financially stuffed!

So it's not just black or white IMO.
If you still feel good, are totally independent, financilly secure, still drive, and have friends and/or hobbies, then go for it by all means.

I haven't got any more room in my shed Mort.
I had to let the tree surgeon go in the end.

It's all in the mind.
I don't think I'll ever feel old.
