Ham Radio...?

Is anyone here into this?

I may venture into it, but not too sure.
I mean, is it of any use these days?

I know some people who love it and talk to fellow enthusiasts worldwide, the internet is the way i communicate these days so i guess its a personal choice.

Re: Ham Radio...?

G6ITD is my call sign. I am still licensed but now it is a licence for life and I don't have to renew it as was done in the past.
I am no longer active, as I find that there are other forms of communication such as these forums.
It was an achievement to be able to make contact to other amateurs from different parts of the world. I made many radio friends.
I suppose I just grew out of it. Look what you have these days.
As I said, forums, Facebook, Twitter, and the magic of a mobile phone and tablet.
I would add that there were some nasty people that I encountered in that hobby.

Re: Ham Radio...?

Yes, I understand that fully.

However, that's all pretty easy. I'm looking into this because it's not that easy and there is quite a reasonable learning curve.

Sounds daft I know, but I like techy stuff and find it interesting.

Re: Ham Radio...?

My late Uncle was an ham radio enthusiast. He used to talk to people all over the World.
Personally I liked CB radio, until the skip from Italy got so bad we couldn't hear each other.

I remember cb's - had one for years and still remember the good fun we had going on "fox hunts" - those were the days!

Re: Ham Radio...?

My brother was a radio ham in the 70's and 80's he has postcards from radio stations all over the world, they sent these to people who picked up signals in specific countries..
He picked up a signal from a ship out in the north sea saying that the falklands war was to start..
Sometimes he picked up local incidents from police..
