Alginate and body casting

Has anyone had a go at this ?

I did clay modelling at Art School and fiddled about with wax and plaster but had not tried Alginate (the stuff Dentists use to make impressions).

The main problem, I've found, is that it goes off far too quickly.

Can't find any classes to go to so I'm just experimenting and trying to muddle my way through

Would be interested to know if anybody else has tried it and managed to overcome the quick setting time.

Yep ... I had a good look before venturing forth, but even though I'm 'handy' the setting time is extraordinarily rapid.

PLUS, the darn stuff has a problem with gravity

In other words, if you're attempting a face, it doesn't want to stay where you've slapped it and plops off everywhere !

Maybe you need an unshaven model to practice on

well it could be and, unlike using clay, you don't need a great deal of room or a large conainer to store the materials.

It is a fairly messy business and the Alginate isn't that cheap but just how I'd ever be able to a whole face, is a problem.

The bottom half of the face I made, has worked nicely, apart from the grimace ! lol ... immortalized
