Re: Stock markets tanked

There'll be some cracking bargains going AND money to be made for those in the banking industry then.

I really don't get this irrational panic over this virus when the flu virus is many more times more deadly.

Flu isn't as contagious apparently.

Beside the point really, Bruce. Flu is definitely the more deadly.

So what? I think its contagion rate rather is the point.

While people are sick they are not out spending and consuming, if the disease is more contagious then even less of them will be out there doing their bit to keep business raking in record profits. Flu only affects a small number of consumers and most of them don't die either.

That is why Wall Street is down 10% from record highs in just one week.

Qantas says it will reduce capacity by almost a quarter for the next six months due to fears over COVID-19, including grounding 38 aircraft.

The airline said there had been a "sudden and significant drop" in demand for flights and that it must reduce the frequency of flights as well as the size of aircraft.

In a statement, the airline said: "The latest cuts follow the spread of the coronavirus into Europe and North America over the past fortnight, as well as its continued spread through Asia."

As part of the cutbacks Qantas will:

  • Ground 38 aircraft, including eight A-380s
  • Re-route services to London, flying via Perth instead of Singapore
  • Ask staff to take annual leave and unpaid leave

Miniature Qantas CEO Alan Joyce said while redundancies were a last resort, the changes meant about 2,000 jobs were now surplus to requirements.

I think whatever they do the economy will shrink as a result. So much these days is reliant on social contact.

That is contagion Brucy, but its not lethal unless you commit
suicide?
And if you wait long enough to reinvest it goes up again, so big
gains, low risk!
