We have gone down the route of out of Town Retail Parks, a rarity in other Countries.
That's because the cost of high street or town centre retail outlets is far too high. Parking is also a nightmare. It all comes down to overheads. In the UK its proposterous.

Re: Empty Property

I agree
Our nearest little historic town has very little parking and rental is exorbitant.
The traffic warden stalks around to discourage lingering .
How any shop can make a profit I don’t know .
They have closed down all the banks except one -that will go soon and a chemist . All the rest are coffee shops and charities .a couple of small shops still hang on I don’t know how .

Yes Muddy that is true , but all Traders are in business to make a profit. Houses in UK have been over priced for years.

The Governemnt also make a huge profit and so do Local Councils from the residents, with Council Tax and Parking Fees and Fines plus late fees.
A huge chunk goes on the bosses salaries and when away on Council business they make sure that they the most expensive Hotels they can find.

Re: Empty Property

The rents in the high streets are something like £1200 -1500 a month for a little shop .
So even before it’s starts it has to find this amount .
Then there are utilities and staff
I have seen loads of little shops selling cards or clothes start up and fail how can they possibly succeed ?
I agree councils make vast amounts out of parking that’s why those with cars go to out of town retail shops where parking is free or at least reasonable .
The council in the Gloucestershire town of Cirencester caused outrage when it was found that they had made £10 million pounds through parking in one year .They charged at all times after 6.00pm and on sundays and have very vigilant wardens .
Such was the public outcry it has now given some free parking after 3.00pm . It has an arts centre in the middle of town with classes largely in the morning and a nice restaurant but who wants to used it when parking costs so much ?

It was in the interest of the Blair government to push house prices up because the result was that money came into the UK economy that did not show in the Red or Blue books unless you knew exactly where to look for it.

Quite right, Linyloo.

Re: Empty Property

Of coures we do not wany unsavoury people, alcoholics or drug takers livng in our vicinity..

However there are lots of unoccupied Out of Town buildings including old Army Barracks whic could be put to good use for peoeple who needed help mentally or physically.
Many of these drop-outs outs came from good families and mentally simply can't'cope with life without some aid
These buildings could be run like Hostels by the residents with someone in authority in charge
They could have a workshop maunfacturing goods to sell so help to pay overheads.
Also a Recreation room and Cafatereia
There would be House Rules to keep strictly to as well.
They should be taught to take pride in themselves and their ability

If you see a drunk or drug taker in a ditch,,you do not leave them in them in the mire to rot.
The Christian thing is to get help for them

I know many professional people some famous who take drugs daily and still work hard and it does not seem to hinder their career.
