Re: Painkillers

Best not to take tramadol and morphine-it can mess you up. You might even ring a friend and have no memory of it. See my threads

I think they are morphine based, but if the doc suggests them they are a controlled drug, so ask his advice on what to do when you are feeling better, as I don't think you can just stop taking them. Good luck and I hope the pain reduces soon.

Has the Doctor not suggested physio ? maybe you cant get ther yet ,but the Dr should have you booked in for it as soonnas you are able to get there, you dont want to have to wait weeks for it

Re: Painkillers

Dont think physio would help me Norway, my understanding of my problem is ive torn the muscle which holds a bone in place and when the scar tissue opens it allows the bone to trap the sciatic nerve.

Wise words Twink.
I'm sorry Nom, but you can take independence too far.
I also wouldn't dream of asking others what might be right to take, because with the best will in the world, no one else on here knows what drugs you are already on and what is compatible and what isn't.

If you think it is Sciatica, maybe you could get some manipulation and physio first, then you may not need the medication as much? Could you get a referral for Acupuncture or Osteopathy do you think?

* Apologies, I mis read your first post Nom. I see now that you intend to check with the Doc first, I mistakenly thought you were going to try and get them without asking his advice.
Sorry.

Hi Norm , as the song goes....

"The thoughts of getting old, are getting me down my love.
The drugs don't work, they just make you worse"

And that for me is it with your problem, the drugs may paper over the cracks a little, but they will not cure the problem . Worse they give you even more problems and perhaps a false confidence. Then I expect you have been here before and you know how it pans out.

Just talking from 40 years of it, double laminectomy and now sensory motor axonal neuropathy.

Re: Painkillers

Ta Mups, yes this past few days have brought my desire for my independent. lifestyle into focus.

The fact that my food supply vanished quickly, as i now shop daily as i cant carry much now was an eye opener.

I made an attempt to go out but the pain forced me back, so i took more painkillers than im supposed too and got to the supermarket.

Managed to do my shopping and the dad pram allowed me to sit in the aisle till my back recovered, plus i got to see the lovely Angela who sadly is married to another, but i can dream

Nom, probably not much value talking to us about this - except that we do empathize.

That said, here is Dr. Pum's advice ...
(1) get yourself off to your GP (or any GP for that matter). A home visit if you can't get out. Surely some work on weekends in the UK ?
(2) get him/her to give you a referral to a specialist who will no doubt order x-rays, scans and an MRI to see exactly what you're dealing with.
(3) in the meantime, see a physiotherapist - not a chiropractor. Physio (in my experience) is pretty useless long-term - but can give temporary relief.
(4) See if you can get hold of some Diazepam - yea, I know, everyone freaks about Valium BUT it is an excellent muscle relaxant if you are experiencing muscular spasms.
(5) Anti-inflammatories like Ibuprofen or Celebrex can help.

Be wary of any suggestions of surgery. It makes surgeons extremely wealthy, referring GPs often get kickbacks -
and it rarely provides a positive outcome. Sometimes worse.

Ta DOE, one of the real good aspects of these forums is peoples experiences of life and the information you can glean from their lives.

Your right about the drugs, im very wary these days about anything that the NHS prescribe, hence why i like to hear about members own experiences, worth a lot to me.
