Re: Costly Christmas

Some people just like to buy things, its an addiction. Prior to the holidays some people camp out 2 or 3 days before the great sale. And when the store opens, they bust in like a bunch of maniacs..- fighting and kicking over stuff.

Re: Costly Christmas

I like credit cards. They are convenient and save me carrying money around. However, I do take note of what I spend and always pay off the full amount. This wasn't a very expensive Christmas for us. The children are grown and earning more than my pension! No grandkids to buy for.

Some people are going to get a big shock when the bills land on the doormat, but while I have limited sympathy for them, the banks shouldn't be so fast at dishing out cards to all and sundry.

Painter I was watching the news the other day when it was showing some sales and it showed one woman clutching for dear life onto about 5 handbags ...she struck me as being gross and greedy,it looked awful and selfish..she obviously didnt realise what she looked like.

I have never had anything on HP.
My parents brought me up the same way and it makes perfect sense.
No expense for me at all this year .. no family left = no problem

Im sure people spend on the plastic and dont give a second thought about how theyre actually going to pay it back. Its almost as if it doesnt matter as its only a plastic card not real money.
I have always had a fear of debt, I think it is because my parents and grandparents like most working people of their generation always had the threat of 'the work house' hanging over them. These dreadful places were not formally abolished until the National Assistance Act of 1948 was introduced and even then they remained in the minds of many.

The younger generation have never known that fear and with the introduction of 'easy credit' have no worry about getting into debt.

Oh yes ... the Workhouse ! my interest in family history and finding that a few of my ancestors spent time in various workhouses, led me to read up on them.
Also, the Tony Robinson's programmes showed us just how appalling the work was.

One of my Gt Grandmothers died in a London workhouse in 1911

My parents believed in this too.
They spent their lives scrimping and saving .
but you know life is short .
Always thinking of 'jam tomorrow' is not good either
Tomorrow may never come.

Re: Costly Christmas

I too was brought up with the "if you can't afford it, don't buy it" drummed into me. I've been hard up but I've never been in debt and never want to be. I would rather go without than owe anything to anyone, apart from the 20 cents I always seem to owe my friend, or she owes me
