Meg, you're right. I've just been looking at the beautiful ornate invitation again, and though I don't understand some of it, it looks like its going to be over 3 DAYS at three different venues!!

Mind you, there was something written along the bottom that I thought was rather beautiful. It says:

"No gifts please, your presence is your blessing."

I love those words, and thought them really touching and quite moving.

Re: Wedding invite

There is usually a Mehndi party - where the bride has lovely intricate patterns painted on her hands - sometimes feet as well. The there is the Sangeet - which is music, dancing and poetry - everyone does their 'party piece'. The bride and groom have separate ones.

Then the actually wedding ceremony and feast.

Just make sure your head of the queue to catch the bouquet. And take a handbag to dance around.

Fat lot of help you are.

It's my Yoga teacher who gave me the invite, it's her son that's getting married. I'm very fond of her, she's a lovely lady. I'll have to talk to her about it and get her to explain more, she knows I don't understand a lot of their culture.
I certainly can't disappear for three days.

Re: Wedding invite

Oh Oh, Please don't think I am intentionally trying to put a damper on what so far is a lovely thread regarding weddings and what to wear but I have a terrible confession to make and a question to ask others....... Am I the only person in the world I wonder that loathes being invited to weddings? especially when distance is involved. Immediate family weddings I love but oh the stress and yes, misery involved when it comes to anyone else’s wedding.

First there is the stress of finding something suitable to wear and ending usually in countless cries of “I’ve got nothing to wear” and the usual expense of a new outfit plus accessories, then the cost of gift, as added to that, most weddings take place in the morning and if distance is involved there’s the expense of a hotel stay for the night before, plus travelling costs. Then to finish it off nicely one has to endure hour upon hour of sitting at a reception table with a fixed smile on my face trying to make conversation with people I have never met, have no interest in and will never meet again !

Boring, Boring, Boring !

I know, you are all thinking what a miserable old Fart!! Honestly I’m not usually that type of person. I know I must be the world’s worst person for thinking such unkind thoughts about someone who cares enough to send me an invitation to what to them is the most important day of their lives but I can’t help the way I feel about weddings. And before anyone says I care only about the money, let me assure you now it’s not just that - I confess I just find the whole experience tedious. If I could - I would just decline the invitation and send some money but so far it has been countless weddings of relatives, nephews and nieces of hubby which usually involves travelling from Shropshire to London and surrounding areas so always difficult to decline invitations.

Am I the only person on the planet to think this way do you think?

You are not alone! I hate weddings too. I don't mind the actual marriage part (even quite enjoy observing that bit), but it's the reception afterwards that I loathe.

Perhaps it is fortunate that I rarely get wedding invites now...

I don't usually Ania, I seem to remember the last invite was - my own.

I don't know if I shall go, I may not understand a word spoken if its all in their own language, but it was kind of her to think of me.
