Re: Are children just boisterous or have they got a problem?

Too much sugar.
Too little time spent actually teaching children social behaviour.
Too much time spent on phones and tablets by parents and children
( and grandmas for that matter)
Some children are however hyper active and difficult to control these may grow up to be successful business men.

Re: Are children just boisterous or have they got a problem?

Only a couple of days ago in Wetherspoons, our meal was spoiled because right in the middle of eating our food, the family from hell and friends came in and sat near us.
Their Sproggs were constantly Running around, sliding on the banister, and making lots of noise.
All this while the rest of the loud mouthed parents and family and friends took no notice of what their children from hell were doing, and just boozed.

There was nothing wrong with those sproggs that a good old fashioned smack on the arse wouldn't have cured!

I so agree with you Boozercruiser. Although I am against spanking now I use to give my children a smack when they misbehaved and as they have said to me many a time Quote..."It didn't do us any harm Mum."

I think ADHD is used to excuse bad behaviour and poor parenting- and I also think, a bit off topic, that people who say they're dyslexic simply are unable to spell. They don't understand what dyslexia means.

Back to the children - totally agree with many of the comments about parents on mobiles and showing no interest in what their children are doing, also agree about smacking, and about poor sugary diets.

Re: Are children just boisterous or have they got a problem?

My son had/has ADHD ( proven by specialists) I have never given him any medication. I controled his diet very carefully.
We worked with cooking timers,, if I said 10 mins the timer was set and I honoured the time limit. He learned to sit still and concentrate.

Once when travelling I had my three children with me, the train was stuck for two hours due to a breakdown..
When we arrived at our destination several passengers stopped and complimented me on my children's good behaviour.

My children didnt get a lot of smacks but they did get taught about respect.
Respect for themselves and respect for others.

My son is now a father, his daughter has ADHD she will not be medicated.
His son my lovely grandson has autism, he can be unruly and noisy.
If my g.son kicks off his father will remove him from the situation.
Take him outside , let him work out whatever frustration it is and then re-join the group.
My son is working hard because as he says the illness is his sons and as a family they have to work with it and his son needs to be able to be a part of society and its rules.

Im just sad that other parents cant see that. Last weekend our visit to a war museum was ruined by out of control children, climbing and touching exhibits, screaming and running riot and the parents? No where to be found..

I also feel that some lazy parents use the ADHD card to excuse bad behaviour and lack of parenting and that this is leading to those of us who really do have ADHD children and who are trying, to be falsely labeled as bad parents.

Cass, I am sure we all know that their are genuine cases of these illnesses and it is a pleasure to hear that some caring families have found a way to deal with them without all the drugs. I have always thought that a parent, with a child who is really ill, devotes more time to the care of that child to make them better. It sounds like you family are doing that to great effect!

I always feel sad for the genuine cases as they tend to gte lumped in with the kids who are just naughty, anyone actually seen proper ADHD will know it is far more than just behaving badly and my hat is off to anyone who copes with a child with true ADHD.

Trouble nowadays is most children eat rubbish full of E numbers and god knows what and all this fizzy drink is full of sugar and again rubbish that is what makes them behave as they do. Probably the same with some adults thats why they become hooligans.

So true. My sister didn't know how to deal with her son's teenage angst and ever since (he is now 21) has tried to label him with some illness or other. He has never been diagnosed with any illness.

I don't think the ADHD cause was helped by Coronation Street running a storyline about Max being naughty and then being 'cured' as soon as he was on tablets.

Cass, respect to you. I wish more parents were like you.

Re: Are children just boisterous or have they got a problem?

Another point ..societies expectations.

Say a child has ADHD or a problem on the Autism spectrum such as my second son has and lots of people will write off the child with regard to academic qualifications.
I was told not to bother academically with my ADHD son who also has Dyslexia(real) and a neurological problem which causes hand tremors.
I was told he would be lucky to leave school with a basic leaving cert and I shouldnt build his hopes up..

That hopeless case is now and international IT consultant who speaks 3 languages fluently and is passable in at least two others.

To parents of ADHD or autistic children ..Set your own goals dont be put off or told your child cant achieve what they want..
