Re: Got a light mate?

I seem to remember an advert for Gold Flake which went something like "Good for your thraple" Maybe only a Scottish thing.

Re: Got a light mate?

I've still got my Dad's Ronson Varaflame lighter. Very retro now. I used a Ronson Varaflame Windshield Lighter myself. A few friends used Swan Vesta matches so they could strike them on a wall, or look even more cool by striking them on the sole of their shoe.

I remember calling them that. 'Coffin nails' was another nickname for cigarettes.

They both experienced real health problems. My father was more successful and lived to be 81 years old. My mother died aged 59.

Re: Got a light mate?

During my army basic training there were occasions when we were told to fall out for a smoke. Then as an afterthought the NCO would say ‘those who don’t smoke can go through the motions.’

I enjoy the odd pipeful of tobacco or a cigar on special occasions. I but the baccy and cigars in Germany where you still get proper tobacconist's shops.

Re: Got a light mate?

3 shillings and tuppence for 20, Never alone with a Strand.1959.

Oh hate the stinking things, hate them near me even outside, when I draw a lungful in as a person passes.

Last thing I remember in a packet was the "Turf Cigarette Card". Cigarette cards pre-War I have dozens of great mint sets all very interesting and cannot give them away .

First and last fags for me was when I was 14, won 50 on the end of the pier, smoked them, threw up and never again.

£9 for 20, somebody is pulling mine

Never alone with a strand....we all had the Mac not the fags and no we were not "flashers"

Re: Got a light mate?

I used to smoke Weights (for heavy smokers ) when I was a teenager. All the shops were shut, so I went into a pub to buy 10 Weights. What I didn't know was that the pub was owned by George Martin, a radio comedian of the 1950s. I asked him for 10 Weights and he asked with a smile, "How long is one wait then?"

Ha-ha, very funny George.

Re: Got a light mate?

Anyone remember "Passing cloud" which were oval as opposed to round?

Or "Cocktail cigarettes" which were different colours. I remember a girl for my town who would buy several packets and sort them into packets of the same colour. She would smoke cigs that matched the colour of her dress.
