12 years a slave.

Just watched the film. What a disappointment after reading the book. If you haven't read the book then I advise you to. The film doesn't illustrate his despair nor depicts 12 years of slavery.

I find most films of books ive read disappoint me. In the case of this film i had never read the book but the film did nothing for me.

I started reading the book and gave up have no desire to see the film based on the book. I'm sure if appeals to some but I just couldn't get into it.

It was a rubbish film. So was Slum Dog Millionaire, another travesty of a fine book. But that is the film industry now-catering for a mass audience who cannot follow a complex plot.

The book "Twelve Years a Slave" was written in the 1850s and in the language/style of that time. Some people might find it hard to adapt to that style of prose.

I have only ever seen one film that was better than the book, "Atonement", so you can take it as read that the book will be better than the film but a book can take days to read a film is over in 90minutes (ish). So much to do so little time in which to do it.

I don't agree. A film can't capture and relate the essence of a book that takes maybe 12 hours to read. A film is like an abridged book and it doesn't tell the whole story in depth.

Re: 12 years a slave.

I started to watch "Twelve Years a Slave" quite recently having looked forward to it being televised . I have not read the book.

I found the film very disappointing and thought it was poorly lit, the dialog mumbled and there was a lack clarity in the story line. It was more like a series of vignettes than one story.

Same with me. I fell for the hype and the Oscar win so hired it on DVD. I stopped watching after twenty minutes or so.
