All this reminds me of having to get up, in the middle of the night, to try getting some Morse code messages all the way from a tanker, in the China Sea, to the UK.

Usually ended up having to fall back on "bouncing" it round all the smaller stations around the earth!

It sounds as if transmissions can travel a lot further, these days!

I must get my old amateur kit out of the shed.

"Hello Hello, out there, CQ CQ ,anybody there?"

Come to think of it, maybe what the reporters are getting are my final messages, just arriving!

That's interesting. Were you somewhere between the China sea and the UK?

Were you using long wave radio to bounce off the ionosphere? I think that's what I've heard, anyway, unless I've got it all wrong!

No, I'd be sitting in the Radio Room of the tanker!

The best frequency to use, back then, would be short wave.

Night time would usually give us better Radio range.

The bouncing came down to radio stations situated around the world.

A direct connection, all the way, would be treasured.

Ah yes. I suppose all of that has now been superseded by satellites!

I once had to learn the Morse Code when I joined the RAF, even though it was pretty much out of use by then.

I can remember bits of it!

Re: Mysterious radio signals from deep space detected

Many, many decades ago I attended a radio course for my work at a place which I think was called Leafield near Oxford. It was a low frequency, high power transmitter for communicating with British submarines all over the world.

I vaguely recall its transmission was somewhere below 20khz, the aerial was strung between towers and stretched for miles in a U shape. As I drove into the site inside the aerial array my Morris van started to buzz with data transmissions. and my car radio went silent.

I think it was Leafield but I did attend a number of specialist courses at the time so I could have remembered it wrongly.

Surely short wave or 11 metres ish' is best used over line of sight Ted, whereas Long Wave 153 - 279 khz on 1000 plus metres, would travel all the way round the world on the skywave and therefore be better for long range use?
