Re: road charge

This is to do with the government plan to ban petrol and diesel cars in favour of electric only vehicles by the new brought foreword date of 2030, the revenue lost in fuel duty will be billions so they will have to claw back the money from somewhere, so it’s planned to charge motorists per mile, not sure if they’ll scrap ved but knowing our government they will want every penny so it’s unlikely, it could be done through the cars gps, which will be fitted from new, ( I think some cars already have this) or you will be expected to buy an electronic device, ( similar to a Humber tag ; or any toll road/bridge) , how much per mile...? well I’m not sure, it’ll probably start off cheap but then increase with every budget...

I wouldn't call a Nissan Qashqai a monsterous motor, try owning a Ford Explorer petrol, you can't tell the speedo from the fuel guage. I owned one. Also a few Toyota 4.2 ltr diesels Landcruisers Amazons at different times and they were not cheap to run either

I have your motors big brother the Xtrail Tekna Diesel and still get a reasonable MPG out of it

It's a two litre diesel realspeed, and I love driving her so I rack up quite a few miles in the year. The road tax is just short of two hundred quid, so to start charging extra mileage as well would be a pain in the butt, but seeing as I will only be driving for the next twenty years at best, I will drive a diesel for as long as I can get one and sod the expense....I also like the Xtrail but I doubt it will fit in my garage and I don't need four wheel drive....

Re: road charge

I purposely bought my Qashqai because one of the benefits was the £30 a year tax (a big saving on my C-RV which used to cost me £265 per year). Now they want to charge me per mile which will no doubt work out a lot more.

I think all rego in the various states here is purely weight based, there is no pollution or congestion component.

As a Pensioner I get my car rego free which is good.
