Blair, Brown, Major and May.

Inappropriate to say what I think should happen to them.

All leaders of the two political parties who have been kept in power, in our lifetime, because of out-dated unfair FPTP.

I think of them as being like working horses - they need the blinkers to stop them seeing things which might distract or frighten them.

FPTP isn't so unfair; imagine having an MP that a small number in your region had voted for because that's how PR works.

There are advantages and disadvantages to all systems.
Be grateful that our system hasn't proven to be as awkward as that of the USA.

That said, I would be all for a PR system being used in a replacement to the HoL as a check on the lower house.

Think it was a conservative who coined the phrase ' elective dictatorship'.

No, it was popularised by a Tory peer but was coined a century earlier according to Wiki.
All of which is a bit moot when any act performed by government is immediately subjected to intense media scrutiny which often includes misplaced or misinterpreted conclusions.

Quintin McGarel Hogg, Baron Hailsham of St Marylebone, KG, CH, PC, FRS[1] (9 October 1907 – 12 October 2001), known as the 2nd Viscount Hailsham between 1950 and 1963, at which point he disclaimed his hereditary peerage, was a British barrister and Conservative politician.
Served in both house of commons and lords.

It is still ancient stuff of little real consequence to current circumstances.

Really, you think?

We are surely closer to an elective dictatorship than we were when Lord Hailsham of St Marylebone used that phrase as the title of a BBC lecture he gave in 1976.

'Until recently,’ the former lord chancellor observed nearly 45 years ago, ‘the powers of government within parliament were largely controlled either by the opposition or by its own backbenchers. It is now largely in the hands of the government machine, so that the government controls parliament and not parliament the government.’

It's an opinion, and we all know what is said about opinions.
Don't we?

The Priti Patel bullying saga is an excellent example of why the suppossition is just so much claptrap.
An elective dictatorship would rapidly quell such fervent dissent.

But the reason for that fear is their own fault: if the HoL did not so wilfully distregard the will of the people so frequently they would probably not be on the receiving end of widespread demands for reform - which are increasing the more the HoL ignores the public in favour of their own elitist agenda.
If indeed there was to become a real danger of our government becoming a true elective dictatorship it will have come about by the HoL's own incompetence.

Far too many go from the Commons to the House of Lords.

https://www.parliament.uk/about/faqs...ords-once-mps/

Any agenda not accomplished as an elected MP they get a second chance to push through or delay.
