Muddy, I have heard that ‘nitty gritty’ is an ‘iffy’ word but l don’t think it’s been banned yet?

Re: Banned word of the day!

Even though it is commonly used ,some word experts have debated about the political correctness of "nitty gritty".

Some word historians say the nitty gritty refers to the debris -or remains -- left on the floor of slave ships.

This reference may make the word offensive to some people.

Re: Banned word of the day!

Who decides we shouldn't use certain words that we have been brought up with for 50+ years?

I bet many of us are still using taboo words that we are unaware of

It is all a load of rubbish - the world has run mad - and people have allowed it to happen!

Artangel - I have just read the link the Baz put up - if you scroll right down to the end it disproves that nitty gritty had anything to do with slave ships. So, presumably, we can carry on using the phrase.

I definitely agree with you there.

The world is alright though, it's just some of the people in it that are the problem. What can anyone do about what is happening? It is beyond me that's for sure!

I reckon we should all continue using whatever words we were brought up with, to Hell with the 'word police' minority and their strange, ridiculous expectations of the rest of us!
