The first duty of the government is to keep citizens safe and the country secure. The Home Office has been at the front line of this endeavour since 1782. As such, the Home Office plays a fundamental role in the security and economic prosperity of the United Kingdom.

The Home Office is the lead government department for immigration and passports, drugs policy, crime, fire, counter-terrorism and police.

It is supported by a number of agencies and public bodies including:
  • Border Force
  • HM Passport Office
  • Immigration Enforcement
  • UK Visas and Immigration

Home Office scientist refuses to put figure on Covid-19 cases entering UK

MAY 13 2020
The Home Office’s chief scientific adviser has refused to disclose estimates of how many travellers entering the UK in March were infected by coronavirus as the pandemic took hold.

Unlike most countries, the UK has had only limited travel restrictions in force throughout the pandemic. In a testy exchange with Yvette Cooper, Labour MP, on Wednesday, John Aston would disclose only that the estimated the number of imported cases was roughly 0.5 per cent of total domestic cases on March 23, the day that Boris Johnson, the prime minister, ordered the lockdown.

The decision by ministers not to close the borders as the pandemic took hold globally has become an increasing point of contention, not least as the government this week announced plans to introduce a 14-day quarantine on anyone entering the UK before the end of May.
Between April 1 and 26, about 95,000 people arrived in the UK by air, 53,000 of whom were UK citizens.

Last week, Patrick Vallance, the UK’s chief scientific adviser, said a wave of infections flowed into the UK in early March that “seeded right across the country” as people returned from European countries already experiencing significant outbreaks.

Just 10 days earlier, on March 13, the government had withdrawn official guidance for incoming travellers from virus hot spots, including Wuhan in China, Iran and northern Italy, to self-isolate upon arrival.

“Inexplicably, at a time when other countries were increasing their requirements for self-isolating, the UK lifted them,” said Ms Cooper.
This, of course happened on MS Patel's watch, although she may have been flicking through holiday brochures and fashion catalogues at the time ......

More likely still having to deal with a bunch of recalcitrant civil servants hell bent on obstructing her strategy.

Thanks for this post Omah, it supports what l have been saying on
the forum for some time now! But it seems worse than l thought?
I think it is the main reason why uk is unable to reduce the new
infection rate to below 3,000 cases per day?
Who are these travellers?
Surely at the rate they have been coming in all the stranded " tourists"
should have been returned by now??
Maybe government has decided we can live WITH the virus at this
level, as it does have certain economic advantages?

Ms Patel will bring the immigration bill to the House of Commons for its second reading sometime today (if not already) but will she attend in person or as a safely distant video image .....

Ms Patel started her well-practiced presentation at 1652 - in person, in the sparsely attended chamber - the Speaker allowed her 20 minutes .....

Patel's stance hasn't changed:

https://www.ft.com/content/ad2175b0-...a-f4786d5af1b4

Introducing the Immigration and Social Security Co-ordination Bill to the House of Commons, Ms Patel told MPs that, while the government’s top priority was to fight coronavirus, it remained vital to enact what she called the new “firmer, fairer” immigration regime.

Among the bill’s provisions is the near-ending of any scope for employers to recruit from abroad any staff needing qualifications less than the equivalent of England’s A-levels. That prohibition would bar the recruitment of many of the large numbers of foreign workers currently employed in care homes.

Her stance drew fierce criticism from shadow home secretary Nick Thomas-Symonds. Referring to the current weekly “clap for carers” tribute to NHS and other care workers on Thursdays, Mr Thomas-Symonds said the bill contradicted ministers’ public participation in the event.

“Those who clap on Thursdays are only too happy to vote through a bill today that will send only too clear a message to those same workers about how much they are valued,” Mr Thomas-Symonds said.
