Re: barnier the begging clown

Well, the EU troll has done it again, he's taken something he doesn't understand and quoted it totally out of context. The quoted article doesn't say what he thinks it says at all. Read the article and you will see that Boris has told the EU to toddle off - we will not be participating in anything to do with the EU's Covid19 fighting fund.

But boris obviously hasn't understood the agreement he signed. During the transition period the UK has all the benefits of membership, but also all obligations. One being, paying for the fund.
I don't expect you to understand, but an agreement must be honoured (at least if you are honourable).

Only if it turns into reality. For now:

Some days ago DE reported that in Autumn Merkel will take over the presidency of the EU (incorrect: 1) the EU does not have a president, 2) it’s the rotating presidency of the Council of National Ministers that currently is held by Croatia that next goes to Germany 3) and it isn’t a personal presidency, Merkel will not be president of the Council of national ministers, Germany will be - followed by Portugal next year). DE also suggested Merkel will force a trade deal with the UK then. To DE readers this was proof that Germany runs the EU (never mind that in the past the UK repeatedly held this rotating presidency too). Furthermore, the German EU Ambassador said two days ago that London will have to show "a more realistic approach" if it wants a trade deal. https://www.wionews.com/world/german...t-talks-303324

BREAKING NEWS - BBC - Frustrated Merkel prepares to sideline Barnier in move towards ‘common sense’ Brexit talks/

https://www.express.co.uk/news/world...many-EU-latest

What do you think? Personally, I wouldn’t trust Merkel for one moment. She is only sticking her nose in because she can see plainly that her country’s supremacy is being threatened and any chance of sucking more money out of the UK with Barnier leading the negotiations, is quickly disappearing down the plughole. You watch, she is so predictable, Merkel will be holding out the begging bowl, a list of demands and a few threats. I wonder what order she will use them?

From what I read, Germany pays 21.11% of the total EU budget, so she is a definite EU player. Merkel is bricking it because of the fact that Eastern Europe EU members are refusing to increase their own EU contributions and demanding Germany and other Western members make up the 13.05% deficit resulting from Brexit, which none of the West members (understandably) wish to do.

Don’t confuse the government with the people. It is said that the German people hate the EU as much as we Brits do. German politics are controlled mainly by the Energy concerns, and they have Merkel held tightly in their pockets.

If and when Barnier gets the boot and Merkel takes over in October, I sincerely hope Boris treats her the way she treated David Cameron when he asked for a few concessions to avoid Brexit, and sends her packing.

It doesn’t matter who it is speaking on behalf of the EU. Our terms will remain the same, NO extension, NO automatic rights to continue to fish in our waters, NO more ECJ.and certainly no £39b ransom if we don’t get what we want and walk away. The sooner she too gets that message, the sooner we can come to a deal. Simple as that! Boris knows the British people will no longer put up with a deal that will only benefit the EU. We are done with that. Our fifth column will of course, but joy of joys, they didn’t win the vote to LEAVE! We did, We left! Now it is the UK who will have an equal say in what is acceptable during trade talks or we walk away. Anything less is unacceptable. Boris knows this

It’s come down to something that the EU thought could never happen - a negotiation with a new, independent sovereign nation about what we we want and what they can no longer have. The shackles are off. Get used to it.

Indeed. Johnson will meet Von der leyen (president EU commission) and Charles Michel (president EU Council). Possibly Sassoli (president EU parliament) will be present too. THe initial idea was for this meeting to take place ahead of the next EU Council meeting. With Covid19 changing all the meeting days, I don’t know if that still is the case.
In any case, the political decisions will be taken by the EU council. This is just standard procedure too. Negotiators (in this case of the UK and the EU) work within a mandate they each get from the political level (frost gets his instructions from the UK government, barnier gets his instructions from the EU Council and Council of National Ministers, with input from the EU parliament). The main task of these negotiators is to identify areas of overlap and areas of differences. Where there is overlap, they can try to find an agreement each within the limits of their mandate.
Bridging the differences requires a political decision on both sides, hence the june political meeting of johnson and von der leyen + michel was scheduled right from the start in februari.

Merkel will not be president of the Council of national ministers, Germany will be - followed by Portugal next year). DE also suggested Merkel will force a trade deal with the UK then.

And von der leyen can only mediate the process, she has no deciding power at all. The deciding power rests with the parliaments of the 27 members plus the EU parliament. People who expect a breakthrough from a summit between von der leyen and johnson only show that they have no understanding of the EU at all, but then this seems to be a prerequisite for being a brexiter.

Merkel wants to sell her cars she doesn't care about fishing rights. As long as Germany maintains its markets and the netherlands, spain France suffer, Germany gets more power.

Quite right. I'm glad to hear it.

Legally, we have left the EU. Therefore, we are not obliged to enter into any new funds which were not in existence when we were a member.

The fact that we are presently participating in a transition period is, I believe, simply a period in which we and they have the opportunity to discuss possible future agreements...
...or not!
