Re: Leisurely Scribbles (part 5)
Do you remember years ago when it was very important to be the first to own something? they would even use it in ads "Be the first to own the new blah, blah blah. Be the first on your street to have the new Beano annual, a hula hoop, or a “Billy Panama” yo yo. My God you really were the bees knees if you could swing a Billy Panama yo yo.
Even when the new films came out, they would be screened in town first before they hit the outskirts and the suburbs, the ‘rich’ kids would bus it into town just to be the first to see it, then come back and boast to the rest of us.
Then came the first TV’s, an aerial 40 feet high attached to the chimney stack was a status symbol for all to know that the house had a TV, a 14 inch bubble screen TV stood in a wooden cabinet in the corner of the sittingroom, it would have two little doors that opened and closed on the screen, selected kids from the street would be invited in by the owners sons/daughters on a Saturday afternoon to watch Champion the Wonder Horse, and if you opened your mouth while it was on you’d never be invited again. Oh to be the first!
Thankfully there seems to be little of that foolish mindset around these days.
