I thought some of you might be interested in seeing some photos of The Chained Library in Wells Cathedral.
I visited it today with several Steampunk chums and enjoyed it very much.
(Photos have been cropped, straightened in some cases and slightly enhanced.
That was a treat... and interesting.
I'm showing my pig ignorance by admitting I'd never heard of chained libraries, so did a google.
Didn't know it was usual practice up until the 1800's.
The earliest book there at Wells is 1492.
Cor .. I can almost imagine standing there and inhaling the atmosphere of old academia.
They were in very good condition, the library has some sort of climate control I expect (well there was a barometer on the wall).
It didn't smell of old books which was a bit disappointing.
I need t go again because I couldn't take it all in!
The colours of the books and wood in there were lovely.
You sound like me ... you can drink in and absorb atmosphere.
Wonderful isn't it ... mulling over how old something is. I bet the cathedral itself oozed atmosphere.
Lovely Pictures Tessa I have been to see the Chained Library in Hereford Cathedral which I understand is the oldest in the world, it's amazing to think people have been using it since the 17th century.

You're not alone Mort. I'd never heard of this either.
Beautiful books, and photo's Tess.
