Re: Covid new strain.

Because of the threat posed by the UK Virus the National Cabinet has halved the daily number of returning residents allowed to enter the country.

Brisbane has been completely shut down and residents told to stay home for three days because of a case of the UK Virus.

Covered by the BBC here too Bruce.

Imagine all that lot shut down because of one case!
It's not like Aussies not to be a bit more ......... vocal and reactionary.
Instead they're coming home from the coast early.
Are Aussies becoming more sensible or are they genuinely afraid of the potential consequences?

I think both Zaphod.
It only takes one infected person to circulate in a community for a day or too and before long that one infected person turns into a cascade...

That is true.
But where did this infection come from & what was the infected person doing before the infection was discovered?

That's very true. It is perfectly possible to be infected by Covid and not know it. Many cases are without symptoms.

Marge and I have just taken our temperatures and both of us are normal so I'm hoping that we are pretty safe, though you can never be sure.

Quite!!!

Related, but tangential...I read MD's section in Private Eye this week. He cites cases where track and trace have been an utter failure. "As one tier 3 contact tracker told MD: "Many people who should be self isolating don't find out until Day 7....But if they're traced so late, what's the point?"

Stats suggest otherwise but there will always be some cases and (surprise) these will always be the cases you read about, not the successes.
Seek and ye shall find, & we all know what our media would rather we see.

Re: Covid new strain.

"Covid-19 was introduced into the UK mainly from southern Europe, rather than China, during the first wave of the pandemic, according to the most comprehensive genomic analysis of transmission ever carried out for any disease."

"Only 0.4 per cent came directly from China. The largest sources were Spain (33 per cent), France (29 per cent) and Italy (12 per cent).

The researchers analysed the viral genome — the full genetic code of the virus — in 50,000 samples taken from people infected with Sars-Cov-2 in the UK and other countries. They traced chains of transmission by following the slightly different lineages that arise as the virus mutates over time."
