Robert Hooke

Born here on the Isle of Wight, a polymath who is largely forgotten. I joined the society recently and should attend my first meeting this month. I remember Hooke's Law from college.....

Re: Robert Hooke

A new name to me, so many of these scientific types seemed to excel in serveral disciplines.

Re: Robert Hooke

I've got a biography of Isaac Newton and how he came upon the theory of gravity, his work on optics, and calculus. The biography also had a section on Robert Hook and their rivalry. Newton and Hooke basically hated each other's guts as both were petty and secretive in their work especially their work on gravity so when Hooke joined the Royal Society Newton made his life a misery even down to destroying Hooke's portraits after his death.

The force required to extend a spring a certain distance is proportional to the length of the distance extended. So, if a force or weight of 1kg extends a spring 4 inches, a weight of 2kg will extend the same spring to 8 inches.
