Re: Banned word of the day!

Like everyone else, I had no idea this word was deemed racist but thanks to the ONE person in the Country who found it offensive, we now know another racist word.

That's also another one though that we can be accused of being racist if it is used,
even if unwittingly!

I can remember Grandma calling me an 'uppity little madam' when I was about 5yrs old and knew everything! She also called me a 'cheeky arab' on occasion -God rest her - she would surely be slung in gaol for that one now!!

People need to understand that regional variations in language do not imply racism when they are used in a normal conversation to mean something completely unconnected on a regular basis. Our use of the English language is very different to that in the US.

I can't wait until Monday morning on GMB. If ITV have banned the word 'uppity', I can see Piers Morgan saying it in every sentence on the programme. No way will ITV have the guts to tell him what to do.

Yes, also words evolve to have different meanings, take 'gay' which used to mean happy or lively.

I wouldn't have thought Megan was mixed race if the media hadn't made such a fuss about it, never entered my head to judge anyone by race.

My dictionary just says 'snobish, arrogant or presumptious.'
I think it depends if you're a professor in history or somesuch...
