The Spratly Islands Paradise?

fancy a holiday with a difference? - try the Spratly Islands in the South China Sea - there is some serious International posturing going on out there between Vietnam; China; Philippines ; Malaysia and Brunei who are all claiming sovereign rights.

Australia has a ringside seat and has invited [been coerced; bribed or whatever] into allowing the yanks to bring in heavy artillery in the form of B1 bombers with a range of thousands of miles in an attempt to frighten the Chinese - you don't necessarily frighten the Chinese like that you may make them more aggressive. So put the ME on the back burner for now it is warming up to be a possible explosive game in the South China Sea - after all it is called by their name!

ps: China as already warned the US not to send US warships into the disputed area - now would the yanks ever do that?

whilst tit for tat China has not been invited to US Marine Corp conference on amphibious operations in the Asia-Pacific region out of a 23 delegation line up - oops perhaps diplomacy is flying out of the window. AND where does that leave OZ - a firm friend of US but also a big trading partner with China - God I hope I can last another 10 yrs to see this one out - fascinating and worthy of a new film perhaps?

Will be interesting to see how bookings for Layang Layang dive resort there are affected. Or if the Malaysian naval base there is ramped up!

Re: The Spratly Islands Paradise?

The Diplomacy before the Warships?

John Kerry has visited China and spoken to the foreign secretary Wang Yi and delivered a stern speech expressing concern about the Chinese build up in the south China Sea [well it still is the South China Sea]. Mr Yi has counter-acted that "the determination of the Chinese side to safeguard our own sovereignty and territorial integrity is as firm as a rock and it is unshakeable".

first round to Yi I would say ? - however Kerry is upping the anti and is next to meet with the President of China no less and other high govt officials [the second round] - so posturing at present or mexican stand off perhaps?

it will be interesting how this little scenario plays out - whilst all the minor players wait with baited breathe [ Vietnam; Malaysia; Philippines; Brunei; etc etc ] all pushing the big John Kerry from behind { go get him boss - show them who's boss around here!}

Re: The Spratly Islands Paradise?

well it's still bubbling away on the not so back burner. Just recently the Americans in an attempt to flex muscles and show support for it's Asian friends has sent a reconnaissance plane flying across the South China Sea. The Chinese immediately responded with a news outlet on their channels warning that if this activity continues it will lead to war - not true at the moment of course - they are both posturing - but interesting to see the dance.

Ah the dancing continues with the Russian Bear joining the dance! - the Americans are flying their planes still ; the China posturing and threatening and now the Russians are threatening the Americans - a real "Trio Mexican Dance" but I can't see a Mexican anywhere?

yes this is much better than watching poldark!

Re: The Spratly Islands Paradise?

and now the ozzies come bowling in with the OZ defence minister joining an asio-pacific security conference in Singapore recently at which he used strong urging language towards the Chinese to stop their 'aggressive' activity in the Spratlys.

so now we have USA, OZ, and half a dozen smaller south sea states all posturing to the Chinese with Russia on the sidelines. OZ has taken a position that could be of disadvantage to its trade with China and we could finish up with some warships are circling around each other in the South China Sea?

I believe there may be oil in the region, which might have something to do with it…
Bet there are some cheap dive holiday offers to Layang Layang right now...
