NSW on Fire

Worth watching this news report there is a terrific bit of film of how quickly a fire can grow and move. The noise of a bush fire is horrendous.

The air was full of smoke when I went for my walk this morning. The last few days have been OK in my area while Sydney has had hazardous air quality (it's like smoking 30 cigarettes a day according to the news this morning).

Fires are burning from the far south coast all the way up to the Queensland border. You can see how dry it is with no substantial rain predicted until February or March - rain is the only thing that will extinguish these fires.

Re: NSW on Fire

Thanks for this Bruce. Not all that far from where I live 3 fires have joined up to form a mega-blaze. Biggest I've ever seen. Heading for 400,000 hectares I think. We are still relatively OK where we are but the smoke is like The Apocalypse. A red- brown sky with the sun peeping through it a hazy orange orb. Below are pics taken from our front bedroom window today which is nowhere near as bad as yesterday when we could hardly see across the road.

Absolutely terrifying, Bruce and Keezoy, my thoughts are with the families and the very brave firefighters.

Re: NSW on Fire

Even here we are seeing signs of smoke atmosphere. It's awful to see this carnage on the news. We've had a few fires so far this summer but nothing anything like as serious, but they are predicting problems later in the summer. It's strange that we can have floods in Queenstown and drought in Hawkes Bay and Wairarapa. Best wishes to our Aussie mates.

Re: NSW on Fire

21 Canadian fire fighters arrived in Sydney yesterday to help with the fire fighting efforts and give local crews time to recuperate.

BTW further to Ciderman's post. Apparently our bush fires have turned Kiwi glaciers pink

Re: NSW on Fire

This afternoon's news:

A 60-kilometre fire front is ravaging areas north of Sydney, as more than 100 blazes take hold amid deteriorating weather conditions.

NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) deputy commissioner Rob Rogers said there were "probably more than eight fires" in the area north of Sydney that have combined.

"They are all in a 60-kilometre stretch that runs from the Colo area in the Hawkesbury, north of Sydney, all the way up to near Singleton," he said.

"There is just fire that whole way."

A thick blanket of smoke descended on Sydney again on Friday afternoon, with the RFS warning it would last into the night and people should limit their exposure.

Where I live, apart from a couple of grass fires (kids?) and smoke haze this morning, all is tranquillity. Let's hope it stays that way but as recent events have shown it can all change in an instant.

Memo to self: I really must check and clear my gutters.

Re: NSW on Fire

OMG
I hope everyone stays safe .
I keep calling my son in Australia he lives in Queensland and says the smoke from NSW has drifted up there.
I worry he lives up a mountain .
My heart goes out to all the poor animals who have died .
