New mountain bike?

OK - I'm 5' 8ins, pretty light - well I will be eventually (around 10st). I intend to go up and down mountains. I don't know anything about mountain bikes but 'stuff' has been thrown at me by my mates but it just doesn't stick.

I've heard such stuff as 'lockable front suspension' ... hydraulic brakes ... various size wheels ... various size frames ... hard tail. No idea what they are on about.

Any advice?
