The current craze for starting sentences with "So . . . . "

Don't start a sentence with a conjunction!

It would appear it's one of those words claimed by both the Scots and Irish. I tend to use the Oxford English dictionary regularly, although in some cases text I am reading / checking requires a Scottish dictionary to check Scottish-English words and phrases. I am sure there must be members from Scotland and Ireland on here, perhaps they can confirm or deny the origination of this word?

I do this a lot. Guilty as charged.
Same with 'and' or 'but'. Sometimes it's quite acceptable.

Thanks for that information. Never having been to either Ireland or Scotland that's something I have no knowledge of. Checking the phrase out in at least half a dozen dictionaries and reference books online it seems Ireland has claimed it as their's but Scotland also makes a claim to it.

I was hoping someone with definitive knowledge about this could give their opinion, although I do have a feeling it would possibly be the same as given in reference books I have checked out.
