Sinusitis

My wife has been diagnosed with this. She has no cold symptoms at all but since last Friday pain and swelling (puffiness) above eye and below eye. Pain goes up to very top of her head and she has a small lump above her right eye. She has been given 5 days of antibiotics. Does this diagnosis sound accurate?

Re: Sinusitis

I didn't have a lump in my eye when i had sinusitis. I just could not breathe or smell anything and you can feel the pressure in the sinus area. But there are canals up between the eyes which give you massive headaches when blocked. They usually diagnose with a CT scan. Perhaps your doctor is trying antibiotics to see whether it resolves.

Has your wife been to the opticians recently? May be worth having an eye exam too.

Re: Sinusitis

Sounds like a fob off to me.

A swelling is indicative of an infection of some kind so throwing antibios at it is a way to kick the can down the road and see if that clears the infection up. It may do, then again it may not. If not you'll be back to the doctors of course.

Either way the doc gets to kick the can down the road and move on to his next patient.

If you hadn't been to see the doc then I would have recommended making a drink of blitzed lemons (whole lemon, pith, peel etc) and a chunk of fresh ginger with a little hot water and honey. That would have boosted your Vit C levels and other nutrients and boosted the immune system.

If you're going the antibio route regardless then it's too late for natural remedies. You then need to concentrate on repopulating your gut flora which will be destroyed by the antiobios. So plenty of bio yoghurts and the like.

I presume you will have been given Amoxycillin in some form. General purpose, wide spectrum, "I haven't a clue what is it" antibiotic.

Re: Sinusitis

Antibiotics ! Of course. That’s the easiest way for them to treat it but not necessarily the best.

I’d get a second opinion. An optometrist or ENT specialist perhaps?

Re: Sinusitis

Thanks for this - under the new NHS system where we are, she saw a clinician and not a doctor Any further thoughts would be welcome.

Re: Sinusitis

Lump above her eye or eye brow ? If the latter it would suggest a sinus could be infected .

Re: Sinusitis

How long has your wife been taking the antibiotics? Has the doctor suggested a follow up appointment? This sort of thing can be quite serious so she should be monitored.
